The Adeje Town Hall’s health department, led by Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, in collaboration with the Walk for Life Foundation, have started the second edition of the "Camino de Santiago for Life", taking place from October 4th to 12th, 2024. This event aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, emphasize the importance of regular screenings, and support ongoing cancer research efforts.
Thirty participants, mostly women who have battled or are still undergoing treatment for cancer, are walking more than 120 kilometres from Sarria in Lugo to Santiago de Compostela. They are joined by family members and close friends, embarking on a transformative journey in a supportive and adapted environment that promotes healing and solidarity.
The event, organized under the motto “The journey is the goal”, highlights life after cancer, celebrating resilience and community. The focus is not just on completing the Camino, but on the participants’ shared experiences of overcoming illness and offering mutual support. It is a space of solidarity and emotional healing, rather than a competitive event.
Key figures participating in the event include Brigitte Gypen, president of the Walk for Life Foundation, alongside her team of guides, as well as Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas and her Town Hall team, who are there to ensure that the route is safe and accessible for all participants.
This initiative provides a platform to showcase the courage of cancer survivors and patients while encouraging healthy habits. It strengthens the bonds between walkers and their companions, sending a message of hope and resilience to the wider community. The stages of the Camino de Santiago serve as a powerful reminder of the journey towards recovery and the importance of emotional and physical well-being.
Adeje Town Hall remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote health, solidarity, and cancer awareness, reinforcing the importance of walking together towards a future free from fear and uncertainty.
