Adeje Town Hall has approved the first phase of a new municipal plan to manage and protect stray cat colonies, after all political groups backed the proposal at a Council meeting on 30th December 2025. The initiative aims to improve animal welfare and control the feline population through a structured, long-term approach.
Nearly €60,000 has been allocated to launch the plan. This funding will support the registration of colonies, sterilisation campaigns, material resources, training for carers and municipal staff, and public awareness activities.
The strategy is based on the TNR (Trap–Neuter–Return) method, recognised internationally as the most effective and humane way to stabilise feral cat populations. A new municipal register will catalogue each colony, allowing the Town Hall to plan interventions and monitor health, numbers and sterilisation rates.
Volunteer carers will be formally accredited and work in coordination with the Town Hall, carrying out controlled feeding, monitoring the cats’ condition, supporting TNR campaigns and maintaining hygiene in the areas they manage.
Health protocols require microchipping under municipal ownership, prioritised sterilisation, and veterinary care where needed. Euthanasia is only permitted as a last resort on humane grounds. The plan also promotes adoption for socialised cats and kittens suitable for homes.
Adeje will lead training and public education campaigns to reduce conflicts and encourage responsible behaviour. The Town Hall will oversee implementation, ensure compliance and continuously monitor colony development.
The initiative marks a significant step in Adeje’s efforts to balance urban coexistence with humane, sustainable animal welfare management.
