The Canary Islands are among the Spanish regions with the highest demand for rental housing from foreign nationals, according to a new report published by the property portal Idealista.
In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hiero) some 21.9% of those wanting rental homes are foreigners, while in the province of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura), the figure is 19.2%. These are the fourth and fifth highest percentages in all of Spain, after the Balearic Islands (29.1%), Alicante (27.4%) and Málaga (25.7%).
Germans top the list of those most interested in renting in the Canaries, followed by Italians and then Britons.
The report highlights how international demand varies across Spain. In Valencia, Madrid and Seville, most overseas visits to rental listings come from the United States (13–14%), while in Barcelona, the French lead searches (11%), followed by Americans (10%).
In provinces bordering Portugal, such as Badajoz (40%), Huelva (27%), Pontevedra (22%) and Ourense (15%), Portuguese nationals make up the largest share of rental demand. Meanwhile, Andorrans are most active in Lleida (18%), Brazilians in Valladolid (10%), and Latin American nationals, including Argentinians, Venezuelans, Colombians and Cubans are especially prominent in inland provinces such as Guadalajara, Toledo, Segovia and Ávila.
The study highlights the Canary Islands’ continuing appeal to foreign residents and long-term visitors, particularly from central Europe, reinforcing the islands’ status as one of Spain’s most international rental markets.
