€2.1 million allocated to support wine makers affected by drought in Tenerife

The Tenerife Cabildo has announced plans to allocate €2.1 million in subsidies for 2025 to support the island’s viticulture sector, aiming to mitigate production losses caused by ongoing droughts on the island.

According to the Primary Sector Councillor, Valentín González, the initiative comes after a budget modification to provide financial relief to vineyard owners whose incomes have been severely impacted by reduced harvests.

“This aid is designed to economically support Tenerife’s viticulturists, helping to compensate for income loss due to the significant drop in production caused by the prolonged drought affecting the island’s agricultural sector in recent years,” González stated.

The subsidies are available to all active vineyard owners in Tenerife, whether individuals or companies, responsible for viticultural operations.

The funding will be allocated proportionally to cover part of the production costs associated with the kilos of grapes not harvested due to reduced yields. Each eligible recipient will receive €1.05 per kilo of unproduced grapes, alongside an additional amount based on the declared land area for 2024, estimated at 300 hectares. The maximum subsidy per recipient is capped at €10,000.

To ensure fair and efficient distribution, the Cabildo has partnered with Tenerife’s Regulatory Councils through a newly signed agreement. These councils will facilitate the equitable delivery of funds to grape producers across the island, particularly in areas most affected by adverse weather conditions.

González emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating, “For the Cabildo, it is essential to support the sustainability of viticultural operations, whose production has been drastically impacted by prolonged drought. This financial assistance represents a critical step in preserving Tenerife’s viticulture sector amid challenging circumstances.”

The subsidies are part of the Cabildo’s commitment to safeguarding and addressing the long-term effects of climate challenges on Tenerife’s agricultural sector.
