The worrying increase in infections throughout the Archipelago and repeated images and videos of gatherings, partying and ignoring regulations, particularly in Tenerife and particularly during the Euros, has put the health authorities on alert, especially taking into account that the island has been exceeding 200 new cases of Covid-19 a day for several days and has more than 3,700 active cases on the island.
There are more and more requests every day from different business sectors, administrations and islands, asking the Government to tighten the restrictions on the island in order to bend the curve, despite the fact that Tenerife is already on reinforced level 3.
This means that the Government would have no choice but to move the island to alert Level 4. The Minister of Health, the Director General of the SCS, and the president of the of Canary Islands Government have all said they don’t want to do this, but with less ‘tools’ at their disposal after the state of alarm and the lifting of use of masks outside in public, they will be left with little choice.
However, several experts have expressed their opinion saying that raising Tenerife to alert level 4 would not decrease the accumulated incidence rates, because the activities being closed don’t target the younger generation who are responsible for the majority of new infections.
This morning the TSJC has started to process the Governments application to enforce a curfew from 00:30h to 06:00h in Levels 3 and 4 and will give an official answer within 3 days, which, surely, would help to stop gatherings after bars and restaurants have closed, the likes of which have been seen in both the north and south of the island with crazy scenes in Veronicas last night.
So, what happens in Tenerife if the Canarian Government decreed level 4 restriction for the island this week? Here are some of the regulations:
- Meetings are a maximum of two people, except cohabitants.
- No visits to other people’s homes.
- Total closure of non-essential commercial activity at 6:00pm.
- The practice of non-federated physical or sports activity is prohibited in the interior areas of sports facilities and centres.
Regarding the hospitality industry, the following restrictions are decreed:
- Maximum 50% of the capacity on outdoor terraces.
- Maximum of four per table.
- Interiors closed except for the use of toilets and food collection on the premises itself.
- Consumption at the bar is prohibited.
- Only table service.
- Complete closure of the establishment at 6:00pm.
