The incidence rates in the Canary Islands now exceed the Spanish national average

The pandemic, like the volcano in La Palma, is refusing to stop and in the last two weeks in the Canary Islands, the number of infections has risen. Yesterday the Ministry of Health registered another hundred new cases, meaning that the IA7 for the islands rose to 32.08 which is 6.57 points (25%) higher than two weeks ago on October 25th, and the IA14 is now 59.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Both parameters are more than one point above the national average of 30.69 for the 7-days and 58.57 for 14-days, which place the archipelago as the region with the eighth highest incidence rates in the whole of Spain, above Andalusia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla León, and Extremadura, according to data from the latest report on the Covid situation in Spain from the Ministry of Health.

The parameters are currently at medium risk for the general population and among people over 65 years of age in five of the islands but are at high risk among the older population in La Gomera and La Palma.

If detailed by municipalities, the incidence rates over 14 days are as high as 220.27 in Adeje (Tenerife), and 249.08 in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria).

By age group, the highest IA14 in the Canary Islands occurs in people between 70 and 79 years old with 66.01which is almost ten points above the national average. It is followed by people between 30 and 39 years old, with an IA14 of 65.93, almost five points more than the national average.

Next, and very close, are people between 40 and 49 years old with an IA14 of 65.73, and then people aged 20 to 29, with 61.17. Overall, in this parameter, the Canary Islands are 12.71 points above the average for Spain.

As for the number of people admitted to hospitals in the Canary Islands, it has gone from 86 two weeks ago to 138, an increase of 60%. 118 of them are in wards, which is 52 more than a fortnight ago, and 20 are in ICU, the same number as two weeks ago.
