Happy 24th Birthday Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly

Happy 24th Birthday Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly

August 1997 saw the birth of the first ever weekly English language newspaper in Tenerife as the Canarian Weekly hit newsstands for the first time, and a few days later Oasis Fm hit the airwaves with a new fresh sound for Tenerife from their studios in Las Tajinastes in Playa Las Americas.

At this point they were separate products owned by different people, but in November 2003 Oasis Fm took over the Canarian Weekly to form EmCan Media, and 24 years later the two are still going strongly.

Just after launch they both covered the death of Princess Diana, and along the way they have seen the currency change from pesetas to euros, they have survived the recession of 2008 and 2009, and more recently the coronavirus pandemic.

Some staff are still on ERTE (furlough) as the Canarian Weekly hasn’t physically printed a newspaper since Friday 13th (had to be didn’t it!) March 2020 so has been focusing online. Oasis Fm is almost back to full staff and is the longest running British station in Tenerife, and also has the accolade of being the longest owned station by the same British owners in the whole of Spain!

We do what we do with Oasis Fm to keep you entertained, put on some of the biggest events on the island, including the Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and put a smile on your face during your daily routine.

With Canarian Weekly the aim is to keep you informed of what is happening with the latest news here in the Canary Islands, or from the UK and Spain if it affects the Canaries, whether you are a visitor or resident.

We’d like to say a massive thankyou to all our staff and DJs over the last 24 years, and our customers, readers and listeners, past and present who have supported us through thick and thin… and who knows, maybe next year with a bit more normality we’ll have big party!
