Elderly man taken to health centre in a wheelbarrow because ambulance can’t reach house

Residents of the Marzagán area of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, are up in arms at the local authorities claiming they have neglected the neighbourhood they live in so much, that an elderly man had to be taken to a local health centre in a wheelbarrow because ambulances cannot access the houses on Calle Las Cuevas.

They have officially denounced the City Council after making several complaints, which they say have been ignored and not addressed by the institution, as the entrance road to the houses is surrounded by cactus, bushes, and thicket that makes access impossible.

One resident, Yara Miranda, explained that the situation has become so untenable, that ambulances cannot access the area, so health workers refuse to go to her house to pick up her father, despite the fact that he is elderly, and disabled without mobility in his legs.

Faced with this difficult situation, she said that she had been forced to resort to the use of a wheelbarrow to take him to the local medical centre because his wheelchair was no good on the terrain. She has also said that on several occasions she has been forced to call the Fire Department to get her father out of the house as if it were a rescue.

Neighbours have also filed a complaint of the unhealthy situation due to no sewage channelling, and that rats that come into their houses because of this.
