Canaries are negotiating to be on UK green list independently of Spain

The president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Pedro Martín, said yesterday (Friday) that talks with the UK to recognise the Canary Islands as an independent territory for travel and be included on their green list "are at an advanced stage". He added that “the good progress of the talks will affect the beginning of the recovery of the destination this summer."

According to the Cabildo, Martín held a meeting this week with the Secretary of State for Tourism, Fernando Valdés, who informed him of the good progress of the negotiations with UK government in this regard.

"The advantageous thing would be to distinguish the islands from the rest of the country, to avoid what happened last summer, where, with a lower rate of infections, we could not receive British tourists," said the Cabildo president.

Here, he added that, despite the fact that Tenerife and Gran Canaria are still at level 3, “we trust there will be a decrease in the level of infections since the vaccination process is advancing, and the arrival of new doses in greater quantities will allow a rapid increase the number of people immunized, but it also depends on everyone that wants us to be included in that list to follow protocols to allow that drop”.

He insisted that "the objective is that from August or September we can receive a greater number of tourists. It is time to work on obtaining the Digital Green Pass that allows us to continue making progress in the recovery”.

He also talked about the fact that the demand is still there from the Uk for people to come to the island, highlighting that “searches for people from the United Kingdom who want to come to Tenerife are still active. In the last week, there have been almost 300,000 searches to come to the island for holidays from the UK alone”.
