Covid update: 97 new cases and one death in the Canaries today

The Canary Islands have ended May by registering 97 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, so that the total number of cases in the islands now rises to 56,369 since the pandemic began, with 1,830 active, of which 40 are admitted to ICU, 211 remain hospitalized, and 1,579 are in home isolation. The islands have also added one death in Tenerife after three days without any, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands.

Of the new cases Tenerife has added the most with 61, as screening continues at the Tenerife II Prison following an outbreak affecting over 40 staff and inmates, Gran Canaria has 19 new cases, Lanzarote has 13, Fuerteventura has 4, and thee were no new cases detected in La Palma, La Gomera, or El Hierro.

They have also updated the vaccination statistics which show that 330,364 people are now fully immunised in the Canary Islands having had two doses or the Janssen single dose vaccine, and 763, 512 people have had at least one jab.

They’ve also confirmed that almost 40% of 50-59 year olds have already received their first, or the Janssen, jab, and appointments are now being given for people in their 30’s and 40’s over the next few weeks, and some of the smaller islands have started on the 40-49 year old age group already.

The IA7 for the Canary Islands has stayed the same at 32.91 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the IA14 has dropped to 72.89. To date, a total of 1,134,236 PCR tests have been carried out on the islands, of which 2,192 correspond to the last 24 hours.
