Covid update: 147 new cases, the lowest number since the end of June

The Ministry of Health has reported 147 new cases today of coronavirus, the lowest daily total in the Canary Islands for two months. Of these, 74 are in Tenerife, 53 are in Gran Canaria, 13 in Lanzarote, 4 in Fuerteventura, 2 in El Hierro, 1 in La Palma, and none in La Gomera.

The downward trend is continuing in the archipelago, with an IA7 of less than 80 in all of the islands, and now stands at 63.74 for the islands as a whole, and the IA14 is now 154.97 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The SCS have announced that 1.5 million people have now been fully vaccinated in the Canary Islands, which represents 76% of the target audience over the age of 12 years old. Many people are questioning as to why we don’t have herd immunity yet with 82% having had one jab and 76% fully covered, but the reason is the Delta variant.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus (B.1.617.2) has moved the goalposts and meant that more coverage by vaccines is necessary, as it now accounts for 89.3% of all cases in the islands, is 1,000 times more transmissible (i.e. easier to catch) than previous variants, is more deathly (which is why the number of victims has sharply increased), and is the only variant that is able to be spread by vaccinated people.

This means that until more people continue to be vaccinated, there will be restrictions, there will be alert levels, and we won’t get back to normal. The data over the last year from the billions of vaccines that have been administered globally don’t indicate of any long term effects (as there aren’t in any vaccines in history), however, we don’t know yet what the long term side effects of having Covid are, although signs are that 10% of people are suffering from long Covid.
