The latest data from the Ministry of Health reports of 201 new cases of coronavirus in the Canary Islands today, the day that masks don’t have to be worn outside in public, and Tenerife moves into alert Level 3. Tenerife is once again the epicentre of the pandemic with 165 (82%) of the new cases followed by Gran Canaria with 26, 7 in Fuerteventura, 2 in Lanzarote, and 1 in La Palma.
With only 39 medical discharges the total number of cases is now 60,147 since the pandemic began with 2,715 active cases in the islands of which 201 are in hospital wards, 26 are in ICU and 2,488 are in home isolation.
Public Health advisors are very concerned that the no mask rule and Level 3 for Tenerife have both come at a very bad time, and believe that if the public are not responsible, it could lead a further spike in cases and make the situation on the island even worse than it is now.
