New cases continue to increase, incidence rates continue to increase, the positivity rate continues to increase, the R rate of contagion continues to increase, the number of vaccinations continues to increase, but there were zero Covid related deaths today, which seems to now be the pattern of this evolution of coronavirus versus vaccines. However, the number of people hospitalised in wards and ICU has also continued to increase.
A new daily record of 816 new cases has been recorded today, a number that was unthinkable earlier in the pandemic, with 436 reported in Tenerife, 306 in Gran Canaria, 36 in Fuerteventura, 18 in La Palma, 11 in Lanzarote, 9 in La Gomera, and none in El Hierro.
Two of the islands hospitals, in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, are activating emergency protocols in the face of new admissions. The numbers of 328 patients in wards and 62 in ICU may sound low, but it’s when Covid patients reach 15% occupancs that alarm bells go off, as these patients combined with ‘normal’ patients, causes the pressure on the health system.
The over 18s have started to respond to the Governments call for vaccination without an appointment with all slots taken yesterday in all centres. Many of the youngsters wanted to prove that it is the minority that don’t want to be vaccinated as they showed their stance by turning up for a jab.
Not all could be inoculated yesterday, but they were given a time slot for today to ensure inoculation. The pace has also quickened in the 20-29 age group as the SCS have confirmed that 75,000 people in this age group have now had their first jab, as the islands need its younger residents to achieve herd immunity.
