The latest data from the Ministry of Health shows that almost 70,000 people in the islands have now had coronavirus, with 8,566 still active of which 319 are in hospital wards, 53 are in ICU, and 8,194 are in home isolation. In fact, admissions to hospitals in the Canary Islands have increased by 11% in the last 24 hours which is why the authorities are concerned about the volume of cases, compared to many of the public who believe the number of cases doesn’t matter anymore.
Incidence rates have continued to increase with the IA7 for the islands now at 195.22 and the IA14 at 336.82, even with a high number of medical discharges of 440. Tenerife still has the worst data with an IA7 of 250.81 and an IA14 of 444.43 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but even Lanzarote in Level 1, now has data outside the parameters for tourism with an IA7 of 77.66 and IA14 of 99.48.
The Ministry of Health have confirmed that a 4-year-old girl with Covid has been admitted to the Insular Materno Infantil hospital in Las Palmas. Alejandra Torres, manager of the hospital complex in Gran Canaria, said “there are also people aged between 26 and 28 years old, and the youngest patient in intensive care is 29 years old.”
Torres pointed out that "the accumulated incidence rates in the Canary Islands are starting to have an impact on hospitalizations. There are some cases of people admitted with complete vaccination but the number of vaccinated patients requiring ICU is much lower than in previous waves of the pandemic."
