Covid update: Incidence rates go up again but active cases come down

The latest data from the Ministry of Health reports of 132 new cases in the Canary Islands today, of which 99 are in Tenerife, 22 are in Gran Canaria, 6 in Lanzarote, 3 in La Gomera, 1 in Fuerteventura, 1 in El Hierro and none in La Palma.

306 people being medically discharged means that active cases have dropped to 1,573 with 179 in hospital wards, 27 in ICU, and 1,367 people in home isolation. They have also reported of one Covid related death of a 49 year-old-man in Tenerife meaning that 780 have died since the pandemic began.

Incidence rates have risen again with the IA7 now at 43.34 and the IA14 over 80 for the islands, and Tenerife is still the island causing this with an IA7 of 68.81 and an IA14 of 118.35, a figure which continues to rise every day with the number of new cases detected.

The president of the Tenerife Cabildo has called for vaccination to be sped up on the island to combat the increasing number of cases and incidence rates, but insists that "no specialist has given him a clear and concise answer as to why the island is leading the rate of infections”.

He said "I do not think that in Tenerife we are brainless nor do I believe that life is more alive than in the other islands," even though some reasons such as the dispersion of the population and greater mobility are pointed out.

The Local and National Police have highlighted several gatherings (botellons) in Santa Cruz at the weekend involving over 200 people as an example of the fact that people are ignoring restrictions, as well as the start of the Euro football championships with venues in the south having DJs and encouraging crowds, particularly at the England game on Sunday afternoon.
