Covid update: 96 new cases and two deaths of people in their 40s

The latest data from the Ministry of Health reports of 96 new cases of coronavirus in the Canary Islands today, and the death of a 48-year-old woman in Tenerife and a 41-year-old man in Gran Canaria. Both had complications with Covid which had affected previous pathologies and were admitted to hospital.

Of the new cases 43 are in Tenerife, 36 are in Gran Canaria, 8 are in Fuerteventura, 3 are in Lanzarote, 3 in La Palma, and 3 in La Gomera. Active cases have increased again due to 96 new cases and only 24 medical discharges, and incidence rates have continued to increase as well with Fuerteventura's IA14 now over 80.

Earlier today, Begoña Reyero, the coordinator of the vaccination campaign in the Canary Islands, said that there is a percentage of young people that they cannot find to vaccinate them, saying "we have tried to get hold of these people who have not had an appointment, but a high percentage of them do not pick up the phone, so they may not be in the Islands.”

The Canary Islands have administered almost 3.2 million doses of Covid vaccines, which means that 1,672,112 people have received at least one dose, 85.28% of the target population over 12 years of age. For their part, 1,647,114 people have been fully vaccinated, which represents 84% immunized. At a national level, 88.7% are already immunized and 90.4% have at least one dose.

Asked about the causes of this gap in levels below the national average, Reyero stressed that “we have a factor that is playing against us. There is a high percentage of young people who are not physically in the Canary Islands and who we are not locating, who are residents, but who at the moment because they are foreigners and have left the islands, maybe because they are studying or working abroad, we are not locating or reaching them, but it isn’t for the want of trying".

She insisted that SCS efforts are now focused on administering booster doses. "Right now, our campaign is very much aimed at protecting people even more with extra doses. Therefore, the vaccination campaign and strategy will continue to insist on increasing coverage as much as possible to those people who have not received a dose, and reinforcing the vulnerable."
