Covid update: Incidence rates and contagion rates increase, but no deaths today

Following an earlier article we are reporting today’s update from the Ministry of Health from a different angle. Their latest data shows that the R rate of contagion has now increased above the necessary 1 to 1.15 meaning that the virus is spreading quicker, and the positivity rate for PCR tests is 7.41% which is well above the 4.5% needed to be classed as a safe destination.

ICU occupancy has stayed stable at 33 Covid patients, with only Tenerife having pressure on the health service, hence being in Level 3, and eight more Covid patients have been admitted to hospital meaning there are 215 people in Covid wards.

Regarding incidence rates, they have increased too, with the 7 day incidence rate for the islands now at 103.45, over double what is required to reactivate tourism. The IA14 has increased also to 162.96, and it is this indicator with the PCR positivity rate that had led the ECDC to class the archipelago as a red, or high risk, zone.

There were no Covid related deaths today in the Canary Islands, which is why ICU numbers have not dropped, so the total number of deaths during the pandemic stays at 791, with a steady drop this year as follows:
January: 103 Covid deaths.
February: 71
March: 78
April: 55
May: 29
June: 20
July: 3 so far.

Lastly they reported that 327 new infections have been detected in the last 24 hours, with 206 in Tenerife, 88 in Gran Canaria, 22 in Fuerteventura, 10 in Lanzarote, and 1 in El Hierro. This means there are now still 4,203 active cases in the islands and 3,955 people in home isolation.
