Covid update: 164 new cases and 3 deaths in the Canary Islands

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has notified of 164 new cases of coronavirus today, of which 92 are in Tenerife, 61 are in Gran Canaria, 8 in Lanzarote, 3 in Fuerteventura, and none in La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro. There have also been three Covid related deaths reported after four days of none, all of which are men, two in Tenerife aged 77, one in Gran Canaria aged 76, all from family outbreaks and already hospitalised.

The Health service is also appealing for the next group to call 012 to be vaccinated, which is residents of Tenerife and Gran Canaria born before 1957, aged over 64 years old. Anyone meeting this criteria that hasn’t yet received a call or SMS for the first jab, should call 012 (or 922 470 012 or 928 301 012) to make an appointment as soon as possible.

The objective of the initiative is to speed up the vaccination process among the target population over 64 years of age, although this citation system is also still open for those born before 1948 and between 1952 and 1955.

This week the Canary Islands have had 103 new coronavirus outybreaks, with 580 people infected. By Island, 49 have occurred in Tenerife, 47 in Gran Canaria, 5 in Lanzarote and 2 in El Hierro. By the area where they have occurred, 41 are family outbreaks, 35 social gatherings, 15 work related, five educational, four in socially vulnerable groups, two athletes and one in a hospital.
