Covid update: 9 more deaths and 5,098 new cases in the Canary Islands

The Ministry of Health have reported the death of nine peole from Covid today, five men and four women, aged between 62 and 99 years old. They have also confirmed today, that people who have been infected with COVID-19 can have their booster dose four weeks after recovery, provided that six months have passed since they had their second jab of Pfizer or Moderna, or three months if they had AstraZeneca or the Janssen single dose vaccine.

More smokers die more from Covid in Spanish hospitals than non-smokers:
Latest figures from the pandemic show that more smokers have died from Covid than non-smokers according to a study published today by the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), based on more than 14,000 patients admitted to Spanish hospitals for Covid.

People who smoke have required more hospital admissions, both to wards and ICU, than non-smokers, due to more respiratory problems caused by smoking. The evolution of the virus was worse in these patients, with a higher rate of admission to ICU (10.4% v 8.1%), higher in-hospital mortality (22.5% v 16.4%), and higher re-admission after one month (5.8% v 4.0%).

The study finds that smokers have more cardiovascular risk than non-smokers, and upon admission, they suffered more dyspnoea, lower oxygen saturation, greater lung problems, and other poor prognostic parameters.
