Covid update: Contagion is spiralling out of control with 378 new cases

The latest data from the Ministry of Health highlights exactly why mass screening and mass vaccination are taking placing in Tenerife this weekend as new cases are starting to spiral out of control. Today they have reported of 378 new cases in the Canary Islands with active cases now at 3,413 of which 28 are admitted to the ICU and 190 remain hospitalized.

Of the new cases Tenerife has the most again with 248 (66%), but there is a significant increase in Gran Canaria with 82 new positives, 33 in Fuerteventura, 8 in Lanzarote, 6 in El Hierro, 1 in La Palma, and nine in La Gomera. Given the high rate of infections that Tenerife is registering in, the Ministry has asked the young people of the island to collaborate in the massive screenings that will be carried out this weekend in Santa Cruz, La Laguna, and Granadilla.

The IA7 for the islands is now 72.26 and the IA14 is 128.91, both well above the required threshold to be classed as a safe destination for tourism, primarily because of Tenerife which has an IA7 of 122 and an IA14 of 225, although there have been increases in other islands also (see data below).

On the upside, over 60% of the target population have now had at least one vaccination and over 40% have had both and are fully immunised. The Ministry of Health is requesting anyone aged between 40 and 59 that hasn’t been vaccinated yet or got an appointment, to go to the Santiago Martin Pavillion this Sunday from 8am and have the Janssen single dose vaccine without an appointment, to speed up the vaccination process.
