A man in his 80s died last week from injuries sustained when he was knocked over by a teenager on an electric scooter on the promenade by Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos a few days before. The elderly man fell to the ground in the pedestrian area and suffered a serious injury, for which he was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria, where he, unfortunately, did not recover.
After knocking over the octogenarian, the 19-year-old riding the scooter just rode off without helping the man or stopping to see if he was ok. According to the official police report the teenager was identified by several passersby and recognised on CCTV footage from the promenade as a local lad who lived nearby, and he was subsequently arrested at his parents’ home, also in Los Cristianos.
It is prohibited for anyone of any age to ride these types of scooters in pedestrian areas.
In principle, this is one of the first cases in which a scooter of this kind has caused the death of a pedestrian in Tenerife, although many have been injured, especially as it is illegal in Arona to use any type of electric scooter in pedestrian areas, except for licensed mobility scooter that have limited top speeds.
Due to the circumstances, the young male was arrested and placed at the disposal of the Investigating Court, and the judicial authority determined his provisional release pending the conclusion of the trial, according to the court papers. Regarding the victim, it is clear that he is also a resident of the Los Cristianos area.
