Access to Teide was closed at 10pm last night to see the Perseids meteor shower

The Environment and Security department of the Tenerife Cabildo, has reported that at 10pm last night they closed the access roads to Teide National Park as the park's vehicle load capacity had reached its limit of people wanting to see the Perseids meteor shower, also known as the tears of San Lorenzo, and will do the same tonight when the limit is reached.

Although it is not prohibited to go to Teide, the Cabildo has discouraged the population from going to the National Park due to the Level 4 health alert the island is in, and the forecasts of high temperatures expected for the next few days on the island's summits.

According to the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, this year the activity of the Perseids will occur between July 17th and August 24th, with the most visible activity last night and tonight, but will still be good over the weekend.

A statement from the Cabildo says that special activation of State security forces will ensure proper compliance with the access rules to the National Park, and compliance with measures once there, including group size, masks for non-cohabitants, and distancing.
