Yellow weather warnings for rain and storms in five of the Canary Islands for the weekend

The build-up to Christmas will be marked by meteorological instability in the Archipelago, where today and, above all, tomorrow, rain is expected with the possibility of storms, hail and even some snow on Teide.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow weather warnings for today due to heavy showers in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which will extend to Tenerife and La Gomera tomorrow (Saturday).

The cause of this worse weather is the proximity of a DANA which is a low-pressure system at the high levels of the atmosphere that has become detached from the flow at height, as if it were a bag that remains outside the circulation of the atmosphere itself.

In principle, meteorological models point to a DANA of low intensity and of a fleeting nature, since more stable weather is expected for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Specifically, the AEMET forecast shows heavy rains later today in the eastern islands, with possible storms and hail. Meanwhile, in the other half of the Archipelago, especially in Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera, occasional rains are not ruled out on the eastern slope late this afternoon. A drop in temperatures will be noticed in inland areas and the summits, while the wind will be from the northeast with strong gusts.

TOMORROWS WEATHER WILL BE WORSE

Tomorrow, Christmas Eve Eve, the weather will worsen in Tenerife and La Gomera, and AEMET predicts heavy showers on both islands with between 20 and 30 litres per square meter of rain in an hour without ruling out storms and occasional hail, especially on the eastern slope and the Santa Cruz-La Laguna metropolitan area.

Temperatures are expected to drop a few degrees and some weather models point to the possibility of snow on Mount Teide and Roque de los Muchachos, at the summit of La Palma.

On Sunday, the DANA will move away from the Archipelago. Even so, some drops could fall on the western islands. Some haze is expected, although it will be more intense in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Temperatures will rise slightly and the wind will blow lightly from the east. On Monday, Christmas Day, the weather is expected to be very similar to that of Sunday, with no risk of rain.

The disturbance that was felt yesterday, especially in Gran Canaria, where the most notable amounts of rain in the Archipelago were collected, specifically 20.2 litres per square metre in Vega de San Mateo, 18 in Valleseco, 14.8 in La Cruz from Tejeda and 13.8 in Teror. It also rained, with amounts of less than 10 litres, in practically the entire north of Tenerife and in the Anaga massif.

GUSTS OF WIND OVER 80KM/H

On the other hand, gusts of wind up to 86 kilometres per hour were recorded in the highlands of the municipality of Vallehermoso (La Gomera), 70 in El Pinar (El Hierro) and 69 in El Paso (La Palma). The inclement weather caused some problems yesterday morning, especially due to fog in Tenerife North, affecting several inter-island flights.
