Work has just begun on the new Santa Lucía de Tirajana cycling lane that will cover the entire length of the Vecindario ring road, from Fernando Guanarteme street (via Los Llanos), which continues through La Unión, Avenida del Atlántico, Avenida del Mediterráneo, La Geria, the southern ring road until it reaches Calle Canalejas.
The project is being financed with European Next Generation funds, at a total investment of 1,041,400 euros, with 10% being contributed by the City Council.
As reported in a statement by the local government in Gran Canaria, there will be almost 7 kilometres of a cycling lane connecting several neighbourhoods, and Doctoral, Los Llanos, and Balos will have an approved width for improved safety.
The barriers that separate the cycling lane on Avenida de las Tirajanas are currently being removed, and the entire section is to be renovated improving bus stops and conditioning roundabouts.
In addition, Calle Fernando Guanarteme and Calle Canalejas will be “cycle streets”, where bicycles and skateboards have priority, although motor vehicles will be allowed to circulate.
These are urban roads in which bicycles and new personal mobility vehicles (VMP, such as scooters) have priority over motor vehicles. In these streets, bicycles travel on the road and not on the sidewalk or pedestrian areas, which frees up space for pedestrians. The speed limit in these areas is 30 km/h.
