The 'El Gordo' Christmas Lottery breaks records by showering millions on the Canary Islands

In a thrilling turn of events, the number 88.008 has clinched 'El Gordo,' the coveted first prize of the National Christmas Lottery Extraordinary Draw in Spain, boasting a staggering 4,000,000 euros per series. Fortune has rained down this morning upon the islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and El Hierro.

This win is historic as the number 88.008 has become the most 'reluctant' winner in history. The previous record holders were in 2014, when the winner emerged at 1:00pm, and in 2018, it was as late as 12:35pm. Adding to the suspense, this year's 'El Gordo' turned out to be the last of the major prizes to be revealed.

The winning number was joyously announced at 12:16pm this afternoon on the eighth wire of the ninth board.

This year's Christmas Lottery Extraordinary Draw is set to distribute a whopping 2.59 billion euros in prizes, an increase of 70 million euros from the previous year. A total of 185 million tickets have been released, five million more than last year. The issuance comprises 185 series, each with 100,000 numbers, totalling 3.7 billion euros. A whopping 100 million euros more will be distributed in prizes, constituting 70% of the total amount.

Despite the surge in the number of prizes, the jackpot prize amounts remain consistent: 'El Gordo' or the first prize boasts 4,000,000 euros per series (400,000 euros per ticket known as a tenth), the second prize amounts to 1,250,000 euros per series (125,000 euros per ticket), and the third prize is set at 500,000 euros per series (50,000 euros per ticket).

The prize distribution is scheduled to commence in this afternoon (Friday, December 22nd), concluding on March 22nd, 2024. Winners with prizes under 2,000 euros per ticket can redeem them exclusively at one of the 10,902 Lottery commercial network points. The prizes can be claimed either in cash or through the Bizum platform. The lucky winners now have reason to celebrate, and the festive season in the Canary Islands has just become a lot merrier.
