The Vice President of the Canarian Government and Minister of Economy and Industry, Manuel Domínguez, has called for caution in light of potential oil exploration in the waters of the Canary Islands, as there are serious concerns that such exploration could significantly affect the tourism industry in the archipelago.
Domínguez stated in the regional parliament on Thursday that the "Canary Islands are not just any territory," and, as such, it is essential to carefully evaluate the impact, whether positive or negative, that any activity has on tourism, especially in the event of an oil spill.
"We could be jeopardising the future of tourism in the islands. We saw this with Covid when many realized that discussing the primary sector and any sector is, in fact, talking about tourism, the engine and economic core of our society," he emphasized.
