Tenerife’s biggest ever virtual exercise challenge “The Animal March” is back!

Tenerife Horse Rescue, the island’s biggest eco-animal sanctuary located in the south, is bringing back Tenerife’s biggest-ever virtual exercise challenge in March. The challenge, "The Animal March: 100 KM in March,” encourages participants to walk, run, or hike 100 km during the month of March to fundraise for the 500+ animals seeking refuge at Tenerife Horse Rescue.

The campaign's debut run last year brought in an incredible €20,000 for the sanctuary, meaning they could secure the land purchase they were hoping for, and continue to provide a safe space for all the animals in their care while starting to prepare for the future.

This year the sanctuary wants to take “The Animal March” to the next level, and is hoping to raise €50,000 to help continue their life-saving work. With plans for a veterinary clinic where they can bring in local interns, and an education centre to give back to local schools and organisations, they are focusing on a future of bringing communities closer together to help the younger generation stand up for animal welfare.

“The need of animals on the island is so great that it’s vital that we start to plan for the future of our sanctuary,” says Emma Greenfield, founder of Tenerife Horse Rescue, “that’s why this fundraiser is so important. We knew we had to do something big, that had never been done before, to raise awareness of our campaign and get the community on side, while having fun!”

Tenerife Horse Rescue provides a safe haven for all animals, from horses to pigs, turtles, guinea pigs, and even a bearded dragon, that have been abandoned or rescued from abuse and neglect. Built from scratch over four years with recycled materials and clay, the sanctuary prides itself on giving a second chance to animals, all cohabiting in harmony with a thriving community of volunteers living sustainably.

Hundreds of animal lovers from all over the world have already signed up to The Animal March and are ready to walk, run, hike, or cycle in the name of animal welfare and saving the planet. Local businesses, including Cactus Co-living and Canary Green, are also getting involved, connecting many people within the community with a shared love of animals.

“We are so humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support from the community, individuals, and businesses alike,” says Emma, “but there’s still so much more to be done. We hope to engage hundreds more in the challenge; that way we can pay off the land and continue saving animals from abuse and neglect.”

All those in Tenerife who sign up will receive a FREE t-shirt and welcome pack to help them with their fundraising and can join a fantastic, supportive community in the challenge’s Facebook group.

Participants can complete their kilometres at their own pace, any time anyway, and can join with a buddy, or a dog, or go solo. Every euro raised will go directly to helping create a better future for animals.
