Residents and business owners in Playa Paraiso, in the south of Tenerife, have expressed their deep frustration and concern at the prolonged delay in the works on Avenida Playa Paraíso, which is preventing the normal flow of traffic. The road, which has been under construction for approximately six months, was originally a two-lane road in each direction with space for parking and is the main access route to the Hotel Bahía Príncipe.
One affected resident said, “The work is going very slowly, and there are days when there is no one working at all.” In addition, it has been observed that “they dug a ditch in the road to put in some pipes and other things, and then they just covered it up and left it.”
The situation has left the local community “distraught,” due to the lack of information from the council and the “serious problems” that the delay in the work is causing.
They claim that the problems include a lack of parking, difficulties for buses going to the Hotel Bahía Príncipe to turn around, cars parking in double rows and blocking a lane, and even road rage which has led to fights due to the ongoing situation.
“It is worrying that in a municipality as important as Adeje, and with tourist hotels with more than 500 rooms around it, this avenue is in such a deplorable state,” said the business owners.
Internal sources from Adeje City Council explained to El Digital Sur some of the reasons for the significant delay. “The delay of the works on Avenida Playa Paraíso is due to the fact that they are part of a bigger urbanisation project, that is part of everything being carried out in Puertito de Adeje linked to the new tourist complex, Cuna del Alma.”
They explained that the sewage channelling works of the project come from Fonsalía, in Guía de Isora, and affect areas including Callao Salvaje, El Puertito, and the surrounding area, which are to be connected to take their content to the Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) in Fonsalia. "When the stoppage of the works in Cuna del Alma was ordered, these channelling works were also affected," they explained.
In this sense, they clarified that "Cuna del Alma has not been paralyzed because the complex itself is not actually being built. What was being built is the urbanisation work of the infrastructure to which Cuna del Alma is attached", referring to the fact that it is not the construction works of the tourist complex itself that have been stopped, but rather a broad previous urbanisation project from which Cuna del Alma and the south of the island of Tenerife benefit, as it also involves fibre optic connections and other important services for the region.
These urbanisation works are carried out by the Island Water Council of the Tenerife Cabildo, but are executed by the Adeje Town Council and the owners of the plots are obliged to develop them.
It is important to note that the Adeje Council has recently authorised the relocation of the viborina triste plant, which allows the unblocking of the works. “As soon as the relocation is done, which the company is now going to carry out, the works will resume”. However, the exact time for the resumption of the works is uncertain, as multiple entities are involved in the supervision process.
The Adeje Council is confident that the works will resume soon and be completed in a couple of months, although they cannot provide specific dates.
