Popular beach in South Tenerife reopens after two-day swimming ban

Swimming has resumed at Leocadio Machado Beach in El Médano after water quality tests confirmed it is once again safe for bathers.

Granadilla de Abona Town Hall announced on Thursday that the popular beach has reopened following two days of temporary closure while further water samples were analysed.

The beach was closed on Tuesday after routine testing detected levels of E. coli above the permitted limit. As a precaution, a red flag was raised, and swimming was temporarily prohibited while follow-up tests were carried out.

The latest results have now confirmed that the water quality is within the permitted safety limits, allowing the restriction to be lifted.

The council also clarified that Leocadio Machado was the only beach in the municipality affected by the elevated E. coli levels, with no other local beaches impacted.

The temporary closure was introduced to protect public health while officials awaited the results of the additional testing. With the water now declared safe, visitors and residents can once again enjoy one of South Tenerife's most popular beaches.
