New council contract to remove 350 abandoned vehicles from the streets

The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria, the largest municipality in the Canary Islands by aea, has published the tender for the contract of “management of vehicles at the end of their useful life”, which will mean that some 350 vehicles that have been abandoned on streets and on waste ground in the municipality will be removed.

This is the first time in six years they have issued this as there has been no contract in force that covers this type of service since 2016, as the new Councillors found one had never been done by their predecessors.

This service will reduce the number of abandoned cars on public roads that take up parking spaces and prevent effective street cleaning, and will improve the urban landscape, as these vehicles damage the environment and negatively affect the tourist image of the area.

The object of the contract, which will have a duration of an initial 2 years with a two year extension, will include the entire process of vehicle management, from the collection and transportation of the vehicles to the facilities of the authorized decontamination and treatment centre (CAT), the issuance of certificates of destruction or environmental treatment; decontamination and treatment of the vehicle as solid waste, and the processing of the final deregistration of the vehicle in the Vehicle Registry of the DGT.
