More than 75% of visitors to the Canary Islands come back again

A new report by Ashotel, analysing tourist profiles since the pandemic, reveals that over 75% of tourists who came to the Canary Islands in the first quarter of 2023, were people who had holidayed in the islands before, and more than 44% had done so more than five times.

Fuerteventura has attracted the highest number of new visitors during the first three months of this year with 29.54%, and Lanzarote the lowest with 18.69%.

Interestingly, 58% of tourists who visited the Islands from January to March were over 44 years old, compared to more than 60% in the first quarter of 2019.  The only island where this segment of visitors has increased is Lanzarote, which reached 64% in the first three months of 2023 compared to 60% in 2019.

The island with the highest increase in visitors under the age of 44 is Fuerteventura, which has gone from 31% in the first quarter of 2019 to 42% in the same period of 2023.

In terms of people travelling with other, the most significant sector during the first quarter is those travelling as a couple which accounts for over half with 53%, followed by those travelling with children at 16%. By islands, the decrease in the number of couples visiting Fuerteventura stands out, as it dropped from 62% in 2019 to 54% in 2023.

The three main source markets accounted for almost 60% of the total number of tourists in the two periods analysed. During the first quarter of 2023 over 30% of all visitors were from the UK, 17% from Germany, and just under 10% were from mainland Spain.
