The Mirador de Abrante, which is one of the most famous viewpoints not only in La Gomera but the whole of the Canary Islands, has been named by the Times newspaper in the UK as the most spectacular in Spain. It is located on the northeast of the island in the town of Agulo, with amazing views over the Atlantic to Tenerife.
The viewpoint is quite spectacular as it is a glass walkway seven metres long and 620 metres above sea level, which makes you feel like you are walking on air. It was built in 2014 on a 3,150 square metre plot that is also home to the Mirador de Abrante Restaurant where you can enjoy the typical dishes of the gastronomy of La Gomera.
The Abrante Viewpoint is only a few minutes from the Juegos de Bolas Visitor Centre through a ‘Martian’ landscape that makes you feel as though you are on a different planet. It is free entry and open from 11am to 7pm in summer and 10am to 6pm in winter months.
Agulo is a fairly small municipality, with a population of just 1,096 people, according to data from 2019. It was founded on 27th September 1607 by settlers from Tenerife. However, it was not truly inhabited until 1620, when the town started to be built.
If you’re on holiday in Tenerife then it is worth the ferry cost from Los Cristianos to visit La Gomera and see the Mirador de Abrante for yourself... if you’re brave enough!
