The Guardia Civil are investigating six employees of a mobile phone shop in the south of Tenerife, who are accused of fraud and falsifying documents to obtain high-end smartphones and devices valued at more than 60,000 euros.
The shop in question is an official outlet of one of the biggest mobile phone operators in Spain based in a shopping centre in the south of the island.
The police operation began as a result of a complaint filed by the telephone company itself after they detected irregularities in some contracts for new telephone lines issued at the store.
Investigators verified that the employees of the store took advantage of their position to fraudulently open telephone lines in client’s names without their consent, using their details to contract the phones with payments in installments.
Alarm bells were set off when the clients and banks started to reject the payment, saying that it was an error and that those investigated had received the requested devices in the store that the telephone company had not been paid for.
So far, officers have identified at least 30 victims of the scam who have confirmed that have never signed the contracts that have appeared in their name, which account for electronic goods with a total value of more than 60,000 euros.
Those investigated are ACV aged 25 years old, AEHM aged 30, KNDR aged 28, MHF aged 31, MR aged 30, and PSRS aged 37. The facts have been passed to the Number One Investigating Court of Arona where they will face trial.
