As Christmas approaches, and with Black Friday offers tempting potential buyers, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has issued a reminder that starting from January 22nd, 2024, only certified 'personal mobility vehicles' (PMVs) will be permitted for sale.
In addition to this certification requirement, the DGT has hinted at the introduction of mandatory inspections for electric scooters in 2024, similar to the ITV for cars (the Spanish equivalent of the MOT).
This inspection aims to ensure that e-scooters adhere to certified standards and will also mandate a visible identification method, possibly equivalent to a number plate.
The primary motivation behind these measures is to enhance road safety by guaranteeing that PMVs sold in Spain meet minimum quality and durability standards. The DGT urges citizens planning to purchase one, including electric scooters and electric bicycles, to consult the agency's website at www.dgt.es/vmp. The website provides information on brands and models that have already received certification and meet all the required standards.
In three years' time, from January 22nd, 2027, only PMVs certified by competent authorities will be allowed for use on the roads. The DGT also reiterates that these vehicles are prohibited from driving on pedestrian crossings, interurban roads, motorways, dual carriageways, and pavements in towns and cities.
Furthermore, as recognized vehicles for all purposes, PMV drivers are obligated to comply with traffic regulations, similar to other road users.
