The Directorate General of Emergencies has declared a pre-alert situation for coastal phenomena in the Canary Islands, which started at 10:00pm last night (Friday) and will last until further notice.
The pre-alert affects the northern and western coasts of Tenerife, El Hierro, La Palma, and Lanzarote; the northern coast of Gran Canaria and La Gomera; and the western coast of Fuerteventura.
The weather forecast indicates rough sea conditions, with a combination of a deep northwest swell, and waves which are likely to reach and exceed heights of 3 to 3.5 metres.
The high waves will coincide with spring tides with lunar coefficients of 103/105. High tide is expected at 1:25pm this weekend with a high to very high tide coefficient. This means the sea may pose serious risks to beachgoers and buildings close to the seafront.
The Directorate General of Emergencies has also made some safety recommendations which include: avoiding walking along the coast and approaching breakwaters, postponing water sports activities, and camping on the beach.
