The Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo de Tenerife have agreed on terms to sign an agreement before the end of the year for the expansion of the Hospital del Sur in El Mojón, which means the Cabildo ceding six plots of land and the Government allocating 22 million euros for an attached social health centre.
This was announced by the Canarian president, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Pedro Martín, who highlighted the collaboration of both entities to definitively create a third-level hospital in the south of the island.
The regional government has complied with the Cabildos request by transferring payments for 22 million euros in the current legislature (5 million in 2019, as well as 4.925 million during 2020, 2021 and 2022, and will advance 2.28 million in 2023), while the Cabildo will sign over six plots to the Canary Islands Health Service, and in exchange will receive the land of the old army barracks in El Mojón, to build the new centre on.
The new services that the hospital will be able to offer are two ICUs, both for adults and children, a day hospital, dialysis, chemotherapy, and the expansion of the Emergency Department. The president promised that "the necessary personnel will be hired for a third-level hospital."
In the first half of 2022, the Hospital del Sur registered a total of 3,121 surgical operations, which means 740 more than in all of 2021, as well as 49,307 emergencies and 92,000 consultations, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health.
A“REAL” HOSPITAL IN THE SOUTH:
Pedro Martín highlighted the importance of building a "real" hospital in the south of Tenerife, as it will have new services and, in addition, the necessary space, which will respond to local demands. He confirmed that the plot obtained for the social health centre "is a fundamental advance to cover the enormous demand and need for places that there is in the area”.
