Air quality in the Canary Islands Is ‘extremely unfavourable’ due to the Calima

Air quality indices indicate that the air in the Canary Islands is classed as "extremely unfavourable" as the calima in areas of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, the southern part of Gran Canaria, and Tenerife has intensified today and pushed temperatures up even more.

Furthermore, variable concentrations are expected in different parts of the archipelago, which could pose health problems for people with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, and affect visibility up to 3,000 metres, although it hasn’t as yet affected any flights.

The regional government have maintained their health recommendations due to high temperatures and calima, which include reducing all outdoor activities and postponing them until air quality is good or reasonably good, and paying special attention to vulnerable individuals or those with respiratory problems.

It is also worth noting that this period of high temperatures and calima, which have been affecting the Islands since September 29th has prompted the Government of the Canary Islands to maintain a pre-alert situation for both unusual phenomena at this time of year.

Additionally, the Government continues to maintain an alert situation due to the risk of forest fires on the western islands (province of Tenerife) and Gran Canaria.

As well as high temperatures during the day, the overnight temperatures are also unusually high for the time of year, not dropping below 25°C in the pre-alert areas, except in the summits of Tenerife and La Palma.
