The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow and orange weather alerts in the Canary Islands due to strong winds and coastal phenomena. The yellow alert will be in effect from 9:00pm in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, and extends to the other islands throughout the week with an intensification of the phenomena.
From today, Monday 26th February, waves will impact the northeast coasts generated by Force 7 winds from the southeast at speeds ranging from 50 to 61 km/h. Today's weather forecast shows predominately cloudy skies with a chance of isolated weak rain and temperatures ranging between a low of 14°C and a high of 23°C.
Regarding the wind, La Gomera and El Hierro are expected to experience gusts of 80 km/h with strong trade winds affecting the southeast and northwest slopes. In La Palma, the northwest slope, southern extremity, and El Paso area will be affected with gusts of up to 70 km/h.
Tuesday and Wednesday
On Tuesday, yellow alerts for wind and coastal phenomena will extend throughout the archipelago. In La Palma, the alert will be raised to orange for wind from 6:00am on Tuesday until 5:00pm on Wednesday, with expected gusts of 90 km/h.
Tenerife
Yellow alerts for wind and coastal phenomena during Tuesday and Wednesday. Maximum gusts of 80 km/h with strong trade winds affecting the southeast and northwest slopes, as well as the Teno Massif. At sea, northeast winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) in the southeast, later in the extreme northwest, with waves reaching up to four metres in height.
Gran Canaria
Yellow alerts for wind and waves with gusts of 80 km/h affecting southeast and northwest slopes and the exposed summits of the island. At sea, northeast winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) in the southeast and west coasts.
Fuerteventura
Yellow alert for coastal phenomena: northeast winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7). Adverse sea conditions in the north with waves of between 4 and 5 metres in height.
Lanzarote
Yellow alerts for wind and coastal phenomena. Maximum gusts of 70 km/h, particularly affecting the southern half of the island and elevated areas. At sea, northeast winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7).
