The National Police have arrested an 86-year-old woman, with no prior criminal record, for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Las Palmas II prison during a family visit with her son.

According to a press release from the Superior Police Headquarters of the Canary Islands, the detained woman intended to take advantage of the visit to pass the narcotics to her son, but she was intercepted by prison staff and police officers beforehand.

The police became aware that something was being planned with one of the inmates during a family visit, so a police operation was launched to locate the person responsible and initiated searches of everyone with a scheduled appointment when they entered the premises.

After stopping the elderly woman, they found she was carrying 16.7 grams of cocaine base (equivalent to 374 single doses), 2 grams of cocaine, and 281 grams of hashish. She claimed that a third party had given her the drugs, and she voluntarily handed them over to the police.
