The National Geographic Institute (IGN) have confirmed they registered a 2.6 magnitude earthquake, recorded off the west coast of Lanzarote on Friday evening, 8th May 2026.

The tremor occurred at 6:42pm local time and technical data released by the IGN confirms the epicentre was located at latitude 29.09 north and longitude 14.25 west, at a depth of 15 kilometres beneath the seabed.

The movement was not felt by the public and there have been no reports of any damage because of it.

This is the second seismic event recorded in the area in recent weeks. On 24th April, another small quake was detected between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. That tremor occurred at a depth of 13 kilometres and was also not reported as being felt by the public.

Low-magnitude earthquakes are relatively common in the Canary Islands due to their volcanic origin. Events of this size are typically only detected by monitoring equipment and rarely cause any concern.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity across the archipelago as part of routine geological surveillance.
