10 people received euthanasia in the Canaries in the first 18 months of the law coming into force

According to the latest data from the 2022 Annual Evaluation Report on the Provision of Aid in Dying published yesterday (Wednesday) by the Ministry of Health, 21 people in the Canary Islands, requested an assisted suicide in the first 18 months that Euthanasia Law was in force, and ten (48%) were granted it.

In Spain as a whole, 746 people requested euthanasia between June 2021 and December 2022, through the channels stipulated by law and 363 received it, and a further third died before their request was processed.

Last year, 576 applications were registered, of which exactly half were accepted, a total of 288.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the first year of application of the law regulating euthanasia, 173 requests were counted and 75 were admitted, although it must be taken into account that these figures correspond to the second half of the year only, since the regulations came into force in June.

Spain is the fourth country in the European Union to have such a law which only applies to people with incurable or debilitating diseases who want to end their life, who are of legal age and fully capable and conscious at the time of the request.

They must also be able to prove that they have been living legally in Spain, including the Canary Islands, for longer than 12 months.
