Since January 31st 2020, Spain has experienced a year in a pandemic marked by the high number of deaths, more than 58,000 in the country as a whole, due to the declaration of a state of alarm, weeks of confinement, or the start of vaccination.
Here is a summary of the last year which will go down in history...
- January 31st 2020 - The first case of coronavirus in Spanish territory is confirmed: a German tourist in La Gomera .
- February 1st - Twenty Spaniards who are repatriated from the Chinese city of Wuhan arrive in Madrid.
- February 25th – The Costa Adeje Palace hotel in Tenerife is quarantined with almost 1,000 people inside as outbreak of the virus is discovered.
- February 26th - A 62-year-old man is hospitalized in Seville, the first non-imported case of the virus in Spain.
- March 3rd - The first death with coronavirus is confirmed: a man who died on February 13th in Valencia.
- March 9th - Madrid and the towns of Vitoria and Labastida, in the Basque Country, are declared areas of "high community transmission", so schools are closed and working from home is recommended.
- March 10th - Flights from Italy are prohibited.
- March 11th – The WHO officially declares the pandemic.
- March 14th - The Spanish Government approves the state of alarm.
- March 15th - 2 weeks of lockdown begins.
- March 16th – ERTE introduced for company staff.
- March 23rd - The Palacio de Hielo in Madrid becomes a large morgue.
- March 24th - The Government approves 20 billion euros in guarantees to give credit to companies.
- March 30th - Non-essential activities stop.
- April 2nd - 950 deaths are registered in a single day in Spain.
- April 18th - More than 20,000 dead.
- April 26th - Children are allowed out for walks for an hour a day.
- April 28th - The Government approves a four phase de-escalation plan.
- May 2nd - Thousands of people take to the streets on the first day they are allowed outside in age and time brackets.
- June 21st - After 98 days and six extensions, the state of alarm ends and the borders to European countries are reopened.
- July 8th - The mandatory use of a mask in public spaces is introduced in areas of high transmission.
- August 14th- Nightclubs and bars are closed, limited opening hours of restaurants, and prohibiting smoking in the street are implemented.
- August 27th - Government agrees actions for schools to reopen.
- September 15th - There are more than 30,000 deaths and 600,000 infections in Spain.
- October 9th - The Government declares a state of alarm in Madrid and eight municipalities in the region.
- October 22th – Navarra is the first autonomous community with perimeter confinement.
- October 25th - The Government approves the state of national alarm with a night-time curfew.
- October 29th - Congress endorses the state of alarm until May 9th and almost all communities in the mainland establish perimeter confinements.
- November 14th – The Canary Islands Government allows tourists with antigen tests to stay in hotels.
- November 24th - The Council of Ministers approves the vaccination strategy.
- November 25th - Record number of deaths in the second wave: 537 in one day.
- December 2nd - The Interterritorial Health Council approves measures for Christmas that includes meetings of up to 10 people and perimeter closures. Travel is only allowed to visit family and friends.
- December 16th – Tenerife has extra restrictions introduced with 10pm curfew due to high incidence of virus.
- December 22nd – Spain introduces travel on UK travellers after discovery of new coronavirus strain.
- December 27th - Vaccination begins.
- December 28th - There are more than 50,000 deaths.
- January 7th 2021 - Two million infections are exceeded, while vaccination advances very slowly.
- January 18th – New restriction levels are introduced as Christmas regulations finish.
- January 18th – Gran Canaria goes to Level 3 restrictions and Tenerife to Level 2.
- January 23rd – Lanzarotemoves to new highest Level 4 restrictions as incidence rate breaks 700.
- January 27th – Canarian, Carolina Darias, replaces Salvador Illa as the head of the Ministry of Health.
- January 31st – La Gomera is only Canary Island that is Covid free.
