Bad weather in Tenerife leads to 10 flight cancellations and 22 diversions

Adverse weather conditions in Tenerife on Sunday have caused significant disruption to air traffic, resulting in the cancellation of ten flights and the diversion of a further 22.

According to AENA, a total of 22 flights — 18 bound for Tenerife North Airport and four for Tenerife South Airport — had to be diverted. Most flights destined for Tenerife North were rerouted to Tenerife South, while others landed at alternative airports on other islands.

Additionally, ten flights were cancelled altogether at Tenerife North, leaving many passengers facing delays or having to make alternative travel arrangements.

The disruption was caused by a combination of fog and wind shear — sudden changes in wind speed or direction — in the vicinity of the two airports. These conditions made it unsafe for aircraft to land or take off as scheduled, significantly affecting normal operations throughout the day.

Travellers due to fly to or from Tenerife are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight status before heading to the airport.
