The Socialist Political Party (PSOE) in the Canary Islands Parliament has proposed 25 amendments to the new holiday rental law, aiming to curb speculation and ease pressure on local housing.
A key proposal is to limit owners to a maximum of three holiday rental properties, to prevent large-scale concentration and help protect the traditional rental market. PSOE spokesman Sebastián Franquis said this would lead to a more diverse and higher-quality tourism offering.
They also criticised the lack of proper oversight, warning it’s “irresponsible” to leave local councils and cabildos to monitor over 70,000 holiday homes alone. They propose agreements with the Canary Islands Government to share resources and responsibilities.
Franquis accused the regional government of acting too slowly, noting that since the draft law was first introduced, the number of registered holiday let properties has risen by 53%, from 46,000 to over 70,000, worsening the housing shortage in many areas.
The PSOE wants more flexible rules, including exceptions for the smaller islands like La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, and says the law must prioritise the right to housing, ensure fair competition, and spread tourism benefits more evenly.
