The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, met by videoconference today with the unions and employers' organizations that make up its Advisory Council, to analyze the measures approved by the autonomous community to help the economic sectors hardest hit by the pandemic.
Torres was optimistic, albeit cautious, when assessing whether the archipelago has passed the peak of infections of the third wave of the coronavirus: “We have to continue with the restrictions because the data indicate so. But the progression is positive, the data on infections are falling considerably, the example of Tenerife is spectacular. But infections are also decreasing in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, and in the other islands with less incidence. We have to be cautious, but, according to the evolution of the last few days, I believe that we have been able to overcome the peak of infections of the third wave in the Canary Islands," he said.
Asked about the epidemiological situation of the archipelago, the Canarian president has been very cautious and recalled that yesterday (Thursday) the Governing Council decided to maintain the alert levels in force on each island for another week, which will be revised, predictably downwards in some cases, next Thursday, February 11th, given the decrease in infections that is registered in some territories, such as Tenerife.
Torres assured that, if the incidence of Covid-19 accumulated at seven and fourteen days is taken into account, the Canary Islands are registering the best parameters in the European Union.
However, he has insisted on the need for the population to continue to comply with the restrictions imposed to prevent further infections and avoid a rebound.
