The Canary Islands are marking World Tourism Day today, Sunday 27th September, with a range of free events aimed at tourists and residents.

Activities are taking place in some of the islands' main visitor areas, including Maspalomas and Meloneras in Gran Canaria, while Tenerife has its own programme in Los Realejos.

Live music and activities in Maspalomas

One of the biggest programmes is taking place around the Paseo de Meloneras and Maspalomas Lighthouse.

A market featuring Canarian products, crafts and gastronomy is open from 9:00am until 8:00pm, while live music runs from 12:00pm until 6:00pm.

Food trucks will operate between midday and 8:00pm, while family activities continue until 7:00pm, including laser tag, a ninja zone, children's activities and electric bikes.

Visitors can also take part in a special “tourism passport” activity by visiting the different stands and participating in events.

The programme is part of a wider celebration in Maspalomas Costa Canaria which continues next weekend with further activities in Playa del Inglés.

Free historic walk in Tenerife

In Los Realejos, Tenerife, today's programme includes a free guided walk through the historic area of Realejo Bajo.

The two-hour 'A walk among the dragon trees' route begins at 10:00am and explores the history and heritage of the area.

Los Realejos is also showcasing its local gastronomy at the Cheese & More Lovers Fest in La Laguna this afternoon, with a wine, cheese and local produce demonstration at 3:00pm.

Tourism fair brings 11 municipalities together

Meanwhile, Santa María de Guía in Gran Canaria is hosting the main World Tourism Day event for the north of the island.

All 11 municipalities in the Northern Gran Canaria Association are taking part in the event at Plaza Grande between 10:00am and 2:00pm, showcasing their tourism, culture, gastronomy and leisure attractions.

Visitors can enjoy cheese and honey tastings, children's beekeeping workshops and a digital competition exploring the historic centre using mobile phones.

The nearby Cenobio de Valerón archaeological site is also holding an open day from 10:00am until 6:00pm, including a free guided visit at 11:00am.

The tourism fair finishes with live music from Tacones Rojos at 1:00pm.

This year's activities coincide with World Tourism Day's focus on how digital technology and artificial intelligence are changing tourism, while the Canary Islands events also put the emphasis on local food, culture and experiences.
