Covid update: The Canary Islands incidence rate drops below 50

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has today confirmed 132 new cases of coronavirus in the archipelago. The total number of accumulated cases in the Islands is now 52,267 with 3,534 active, of which 70 are admitted to the ICU and 277 remain hospitalized, which all three figures have dropped. In the last 24 hours, there has also been the Covid related death of a 46-year-old man in Tenerife associated with a family outbreak.

The new cases today were split more evenly between the capital islands, with Tenerife having 59 new cases, Gran Canaria 51, Lanzarote 15, La Palma 5, and Fuertevnetura 2. La Gomera and El Hierro haven’t registered any new cases today.

The good news is that the Accumulated Incidence rate over 7 days in the Canary Islands has dropped below 50 and and stands at 49.96 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the IA14 is 113.97 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In fact, all the islands except Tenerife (66.55) and El Hierro (143.54) now have an IA7 of less than 50. On top of this the number of patients in wards and ICU’s dropped today (see below).

Another piece of good news is the number of active cases, as they have dropped again due to lower new cases and the number of discharges. With this current data we could see them drop below 3,000 in the next few days which would really mean data is heading in the right direction. Along these lines, active cases in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) are below 1,000 for the first time in a long time, with 983 people infected in the city.
