The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has notified of 199 new cases of coronavirus today, taking the total number of cases accumulated to 51,171 in the Canary Islands since the pandemic began. 4,078 of these are still active, of which 83 are admitted to ICU and 313 remain hospitalized. There has also been the death of a 73-year-old man in Tenerife, who had previous pathologies and was admitted to hospital.
By islands, Tenerife has 107 cases today, Gran Canaria adds 68, Lanzarote 12, Fuerteventura 8, and El Hierro 4. Neither La Palma nor La Gomera have registered any new cases in the last 24 hours.
The Accumulated Incidence at 7 days (AI7) in the Canary Islands stands at 63.56 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and at 14 days at 135.43 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and to date, a total of 1,023,419 PCR tests have been carried out in the Islands, of which 3,541 correspond to the last 24 hours.
The Canary Islands have received their first delivery of the Janssen single dose vaccine today for the 70-79 age group, which coincides with them opening the two latest mass vaccination points in the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz, and Magma in Playa Las Americas. These have been launched and enabled with the initial capacity to vaccinate more than 1,200 people a day, initially in the age group of 60 to 69 years old.
Fifteen health professionals will be available in each location to meet the demand of the population to be vaccinated, including nurses, doctors and auxiliary care technicians. Both vaccination points will operate seven days a week from 8.30am to 7.30pm. A space of 3,000 square meters has been set up in the Recinto Ferial and 1,100 square meters in the Magma, both of which have a vaccination area, storage, waiting room and room for post-vaccination observation. When more vaccines are available they will both be able to vaccinate 4,000 people a day.
