The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has notified of 211 new cases of coronavirus today, taking the total number of accumulated cases to 49,577 since the pandemic began, with 4,539 active (76 less than yesterday), of which 77 are admitted to the ICU, 325 remain hospitalized in wards, and 286 have been discharged. Also in the last 24 hours the death of one person in Tenerife has been verified.
Tenerife has the most new cases today with 104 as the upward trend continues, and Gran Caria has 89. Lanzarote has registered 10 new cases today, Fuerteventura 6, and La Palma and El Hierro have one each. No new cases have been recorded in La Gomera.
According to the Ministry of Health the people now being admitted to hospital with Covid are tending to be “Younger and with an admission time of several weeks,” as the fourth wave of the pandemic leaves Tenerife with more young people hospitalized.
The age group between 40 and 49 years old have now been more infected than any other age group, which is leading to these hospital admissions, as 8,671 people in that age group have tested positive for the virus, followed by the 30-39 year olds with 8,116. The older age group infections are slowing down as the positive effects of vaccination are being seen, particularly in nursing homes and social health centres where infections have decreased by 99%.
Levy Cabrera, secretary of the Tenerife Medical Union said earlier today, that "The assistance effort is even greater than before". According to Cabrera, the age has decreased, also due to the pathologies that they have: “We have many people between 40 and 60 years old, with which the care effort is greater because the average stay of these people in ICUs is usually prolonged for several weeks. In general they are patients with existing pathologies such as obesity, heart or lung problems, asthma, high blood pressure or diabetes.”
