The Ministry of Health have released todays coronavirus update which shows that 210 new cases have been detected in the Canary Islands in the last 24 hours, 85 of them in Gran Canaria, 61 in Tenerife, and 48 in Lanzarote, meaning that the total number of cases is 37,593 since the pandemic began. They have also reported of two Covid related deaths, both in Gran Canaria, bringing the total to 549.
This is the first time that daily cases have been above 200 for a few days, and goes against the downward trend of the epidemiological data that the islands have seen recently. Tomorrow is the weekly Governing Council meeting, which reviews the data every Thursday to assess the alert Level for each island and this data is a spanner in the works for a couple of locations.
Currently, Fuerteventura’s and Tenerife’s data supports a move down to Level 1 restrictions, but Tenerife’s incidence rate over 7 days has gone up with these new cases. El Hierro were in danger of going to Level 3, but they have now stabilised and will stay at Level 2.
Gran Canaria could have gone to Level 2, but the pressure on hospitals and 90 new cases keeps their stats above the required level for a reduction. Lanzarote are not yet in a position to move from Level 4, although some softening of restrictions is expected without a Level change.
On Tuesday, The president of the Canary Islands, Angel Victor Torres, said he was confident that some changes could be made on Thursday, especially regarding sports activities, which the data points to, but today members of the Scientific Committee are recommending and requesting all levels stay the same so we don’t see a spike in cases at Carnival weekend like we did in some islands at Christmas, saying that: “If a relaxation in restrictions causes a spike, it takes 15 days to show. Every 15 days of an increase in cases takes 6 weeks to recover, setting us back 2 months.”
